Dramatic Theatre and Cinema Actor

Course of study lasts for 4 years. Upon the main course completion students prepare their works for the final presentation, and those who want to continue their education can enter a 2-year Master’s programme.

Drama Director

Drama director course include two main stages: acting and directing. For 5 years students gradually master elements of the acting profession, take part in trainings and stage plays of Russian playwrights.

The aim of the course is to teach students to fully interpret the literary works, understand the main areas of circus art, learn to interact with actors, study acting elements and understand the tendencies of the circus tricks performance. After the 5-year course graduates become professional directors.

Musical Theatre Director

For 5 years highly skilled professionals teach students on two courses — Classic theatre directing and Musical drama analysis. GITIS graduates — musical theatre directors — are actively working on performances, musical shows, TV programs and movies.

Upon completion of the Musical theatre actor course every student in fact gets two types of higher education — in acting and vocal art. Therefore GITIS trains both musical theatre singers and dramatic actors.

During the Sound engineering course students gain all skills needed to provide high quality sound at performances, concerts, discos and other events. After the graduation they can work as sound engineers, producers, teachers at specialized institutes and even research associates.

Variety Theatre Director

During the 5-year course students learn to think creatively, to generalize and select scenic events to interpret them afterwards brightly and expressively on the stage with the help of actors.

During a 4-year course future actors are educated according to the classic Stanislavsky method. Students learn elements of the acting techniques, work on the character creation and study a number of specialized disciplines. History and Theory of Theatre and Criticism

There are two fields of study — History of Russian Theatre and History of Foreign Theatre. Course of study lasts for 4 years and after the graduation students become theatre historians, theatre critics, theatre cultural workersand editors.

During the 5-year course students learn general humanities and specialized disciplines connected to the stage art. Among GITIS teachers are famous scientists and successful producers, as well as theatrical management specialists.

Puppet Theatre Director

Since 2017 GITIS has been educating highly skilled specialist for working at puppet theatres and theatre ensembles — people also able to become art school teachers. The course of study lasts for 5 years.

Theatre costume designer students study general subjects (at least three History courses) as well as specialized disciplines. As a result GITIS graduates are versatile and multi-skilled specialists who can quickly find innovative solutions.

Puppet theatre designers share the same course with directors — it helps to improve the training of both professions. During their 5-year study designers learn main skills of working with the team on the joint artistic conception implementation.

You will be taught by leading industry professionals and permanent members of the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS).
Classes are taught in English.

A certificate will be awarded to all participants who attend and complete the course. As the Short Courses are not accredited, there is no formal assessment and no qualification issued at the end of the courses, but participants who attend at least 100% of the classes will receive a certificate of attendance featuring the GITIS’s logo stating the course and the period when they attended.

General

· GITIS reserves the right to amend, withdraw or cancel any course. If GITIS cancels a course you have booked onto your fee will be fully refunded;
· All courses are subject to a minimum number of students and will not be guaranteed until this number is reached;
· GITIS reserves the right to refuse admission on to any of our programmes;
· It is strongly recommended that all students insure themselves to cover the loss of any costs incurred in the event of cancellation, illness or travel problems, for which GITIS cannot accept any liability;
· Fees are non-returnable once a student has started the course;
· All fees must be paid in full prior to the start of the course;
· Full fees will be refunded for cancellations within two weeks of booking;
· In the event of a cancellation after two weeks from the booking date, a sum of 9,000 rubles will be retained to cover administration costs;

· GITIS does not offer deferments for courses not attended.
· Please dress in comfortable clothes even when working online or as instructed in the course information.

TUTORS

Michael Chumachenko

The Senior Lecturer at the Directing Department graduated from GITIS (1989, course of M. O. Knebel). In the same year, he was awarded the prize of the All-Russian Theatrical Society in the category “The Best Moscow Debut” for the play “Abnormals”. From 1988 to 1992 he was a director of the Central Theater of the Soviet Army. From 1993 —1995 — one of the directors of the sociopolitical program of the central TV station Vzglyad. From 2006 to 2008 he was Art Director of the Russian Drama Theatre in Tallinn (Estonia). He is a teacher of directing and acting, leader of workshops directing seminars, and masterclasses.

Ekaterina Granitova-Lavrovskaya

The Head of the Directing Department, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Drama Directing, graduated from the directing department of the Russian Academy of Theater Arts — GITIS (1997, under the conduct of Prof. L.E. Heifets). Since 1995 she has been a teacher at GITIS (workshop of O. L. Kudryashov). Ekaterina staged productions at the Conservatorie Chambéry and the Théâtre Vivant, Rennes (France). In 1999-2002 she worked for Moscow Estrada Theatre and staged the performances “Vanya and the Crocodile” by K. I. Chukovsky and “Girls” by L. Ulitskaya. In 2007 she worked as a director at the Russian Theatre in Estonia (Tallinn). On the stage of the Vladimir Mayakovsky Moscow Academic Theater, she staged Six Loved Ones, Cupids in the Snow, and Uncle’s Dream. Also, she has credits as a film director. She filmed three TV serials for First National Chanel.
